For the first time in show history, the Midwest Gaming Classic will feature a Friday Night, multi-game tournament in the Classic Gaming & Computing Museum wing called the Friday Night Up to Par tournament.  The event will cover more than a dozen games across several different genres and video game eras that may be found in the Classic Gaming & Computing Museum from year to year.

One thing the games will hold in common, however, is fairly basic controls so that even if you aren’t familiar with a particular game you may still fare well without having to memorize cumbersome button layouts and techniques.

After hosting the Midwest Gaming Classic the last two years, the MGC has announced that it will once again return to the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel in 2012.  The hotel features more convention space than nearly every other hotel in the area as well as offering a great location for those arriving by either ground or air.

Interestingly enough, this is not the first stint that the Midwest Gaming Classic has had in the Sheraton.    Back in 2004, the MGC was able to book the Wisconsin rooms where the museum now resides as well as the Moorland rooms in the basement where the Community Hall now resides.  This left the entire center of the Sheraton closed off to the MGC where the arcade hall and vendor areas now reside, presenting a major challenge to the show’s organizers to ensure the show didn’t feel too disjointed!

Possibly surprising absolutely nobody, the last full weekend in March is once again the planned dates for the Midwest Gaming Classic 2012!  That means the show will take place March 24 & 25 with certain festivities beginning Friday night, March 23.

Why March?  Well, for one thing it is cold outside!  Seriously, since video games is obviously something that lends itself well to a nice temperature-controlled room, the March dates have made sense in the past since there is less likelihood the show will interfere with outdoor activities like sports, concerts or the dreaded wonderful wedding date.  Seriously, one wedding could throw a major monkey wrench into MGC planning if the wedding was for a friend of the close-knit MGC organizers.

Considering how the 2012 show is still four months away, MGC In-Depth will focus much of its content in the next few weeks on the past shows, especially on 2011’s tenth anniversary show.  While we would love to announce a dozen speakers and hundreds of events for 2012 now, simply put a lot of that stuff still needs to be ironed out.  We will certainly work on content that expands on the announcements from the Midwest Gaming Classic’s main site in the coming months, but those stories won’t ramp up for some time yet.

This gives us a chance to catch up on the past shows since there admittedly isn’t a whole lot of first-hand information out there on the ‘net for the MGC.  The MGC’s main page deletes all of the previous year’s announcements shortly after the show, the MGC’s Wikipedia page hasn’t been updated for some time, and the trail of breadcrumbs that the show’s organizers leave across multiple media outlets can become a real hassle to track down.

MGC In-Depth will likely begin with a chronological look at the last ten years starting with Jagfest 2K1, though if there is something specifically that you’re interested in – or better yet something that you yourself would like to write about for the site – feel free to contact us by clicking on this link or clicking on the link at the bottom of every page!
